Why a clean rig even makes a difference
A dab rig is a precision tool, not a decorative object. This is precisely why you notice impurities much faster here than with a classic bong: even a thin layer of reclaim in the glass changes the taste, clogs the vapor path and ensures that your dab rig no longer delivers the clarity for which it was actually built. The good news: properly cleaned, a rig is ready for use again in just a few minutes. You don't need a chemical laboratory for this, just the right sequence and a little patience in the right places.
Timing is everything
The biggest mistake in cleaning is not the method, but the timing. Reclaim – the sticky residue from your concentrates – is still soft when fresh and can be removed almost effortlessly. Once it hardens, it turns into a tough, almost resin-like layer that stubbornly clings to glass walls and percolators.
As a rule of thumb: the more often you rinse your rig briefly after a session, the less often you need a major cleaning session. Those who dab daily should plan a brief cleaning roughly every two to three days. For occasional use, it is sufficient to rinse the rig briefly after each session and clean it thoroughly once a week. If you consistently do this, you will almost never have to resort to brute force – it is the combination of old reclaim and water deposits that ultimately causes the most stubborn stains.
Which alcohol is actually the right one
Not all isopropyl alcohol is the same. In drugstores, you usually get a 70 percent solution – this is sufficient for disinfection, but when cleaning, the high water content slows you down. Water dissolves reclaim less well than pure alcohol and noticeably extends the drying time.
High-proof isopropyl alcohol with at least 90%, ideally 99%, is more suitable. The higher degree of purity dissolves resins and sticky residues much faster and evaporates without leaving any residue, streaks or limescale stains. If you can't find 99% alcohol: 90% also works well, you just need a little more soaking time.
What you need for cleaning
For the quick version, a few things are enough:
- High-proof isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%, preferably 99%)
- Coarse salt, for example table salt or Epsom salt
- Cleaning plugs for the openings
- A fine brush for hard-to-reach corners

The lightning-fast guide in five steps
1. Remove accessories. Remove banger, carb cap and all loose parts from the rig. It's easier to clean separately, and you avoid scratches on the delicate quartz or titanium.
2. Close openings. Insert the appropriate cleaning plugs into the mouthpiece and joint opening. This way you can shake vigorously without the liquid coming out.
3. Fill with alcohol and salt. Pour isopropyl alcohol just above the dirty areas, then add a generous portion of salt. The salt acts like fine sandpaper from the inside – it mechanically loosens the reclaim, while the alcohol chemically softens it.
4. Shake, wait, repeat. Now comes the actual trick: shake vigorously, rotating the rig so that the alcohol and salt also get into the perc slots and corners. For fresh reclaim, 30 to 60 seconds are often enough. For more stubborn deposits, let the mixture soak briefly (five to ten minutes) and then shake again.
5. Rinse and dry. Remove plugs, rinse thoroughly with warm water until no alcohol smell remains. For the last stubborn spots on the percolator or diffuser, the cleaning brush helps – especially at transitions and narrow channels, you can get it cleaner than with pure shaking.
Hand cleaning or ultrasonic cleaner?
For most collectors, the classic salt-alcohol method is completely sufficient – it's cheap, fast and doesn't require any additional equipment. An ultrasonic cleaner is worthwhile especially if you have several rigs or complex percolators with many hard-to-reach channels. The sound waves also remove residues from the finest slots that neither a brush nor salt grains can reach.
The disadvantage: ultrasonic cleaners take some time to get started (usually 10 to 20 minutes per cycle) and are an investment that only really pays off with regular use. For quick daily cleaning in between, the hand method with alcohol and salt remains the most practical solution.
What you should avoid when cleaning
Hot water immediately after dabbing is not a good idea – your rig is still warm, and the temperature shock from cold cleaning water can cause stress cracks in the glass. Always let your rig cool down completely before cleaning it.
Also, avoid aggressive household cleaners or toothbrushes with hard bristles. While borosilicate glass is robust, fine scratches inside collect residues even faster over time. You should also avoid salt that is too coarse with sharp edges (like some industrial salts) for very fine percolator slots – commercially available table salt or Epsom salt is completely sufficient here.
Treat banger and carb cap separately
Your banger needs its own, short routine: After each dab, while it is still warm, use a cotton swab to pick up the fresh reclaim. This prevents a thick layer from forming in the first place. If the banger is already heavily soiled, the same salt-alcohol mixture as for the rig helps – but in a small, separate container so you can soak it briefly. The carb cap usually only needs a quick bath in the same mixture, as significantly fewer residues settle here.
Throw away or keep reclaim?
Many experienced dabbers collect their reclaim instead of washing it away directly. It still contains some of the original active ingredients and can be reused, even if the taste doesn't come close to fresh concentrate. If you want to do this, remove the reclaim with a tool or cotton swab before the actual alcohol-salt cleaning and store it separately. The subsequent basic cleaning of the rig does not change the process.
