What is the vegetative phase in cannabis?

The vegetative phase, or "Vegi" for short, is the growth stage between germination and flowering. During this time, the plant lays the foundation for everything that comes later: root system, stem thickness, branching, and leaf mass. Those who understand and properly manage this phase significantly determine how lush and productive the subsequent flowering will be. In short: Vegi is the construction phase, and flowering is the harvest of what has been built.

How long does the vegetative phase last?

The duration of the Vegi phase depends heavily on whether you are growing autoflowering or photoperiodic strains. In autoflowering genetics, the vegetative phase automatically transitions into flowering after a few weeks, regardless of the light cycle, usually after about two to four weeks. With photoperiodic strains, you determine the length of Vegi yourself by changing the light cycle. Here, the phase can last anywhere from three weeks to several months, depending on the desired final size.

Light cycle in the Vegi phase

For photoperiodic plants, light is the decisive switch between growth and flowering. Traditionally, growers use 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness during Vegi, while some growers even opt for continuous 20 or even 24 hours of light to maximize growth. One thing is particularly important: as soon as you switch to a 12/12 cycle, i.e., 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, you signal to the plant the transition to flowering. Until then, it remains in the vegetative state.

Nutrient requirements during Vegi

In the vegetative phase, the focus is clearly on nitrogen (N), as this is central to the growth of leaves and stems. While phosphorus and potassium are also important, they play a subordinate role compared to the later flowering phase. Most specialized growth fertilizers are formulated accordingly with an emphasis on nitrogen.

A common beginner's mistake is over-fertilization: because the plant reacts so visibly to nutrients during Vegi, too much and too frequent fertilization is often applied. Yellow leaf tips or curled-down leaves are typical signs of an overdose and should be taken seriously as a warning signal.

The right environment: temperature, humidity, and ventilation

Cannabis grows best during the Vegi phase at temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius during the light phase, slightly cooler in the dark phase. The relative humidity should be higher during this phase than later in flowering, ideally between 55 and 70 percent, as young plants tolerate and benefit from moisture.

Good air circulation is also crucial, both to prevent mold growth and to strengthen the stems from the start through slight movement. A small fan that gently moves the plants simulates natural wind and makes them more resilient.

Training methods in the vegetative phase

Vegi is the ideal time to actively influence the later shape and yield of the plant. Common training methods include:

  • Topping: Cutting off the main stem tip, which encourages the plant to grow bushier and produce more colas.
  • LST (Low Stress Training): Gently bending down branches to achieve a flatter, more even growth habit.
  • SCROG (Screen of Green): A net through which branches are woven to create an even canopy and uniform light distribution.
  • Defoliation: Targeted removal of individual large leaves to allow light and air to better reach lower areas.

Important for all training methods: Allow enough time for recovery. Those who intervene too aggressively during Vegi without giving the plant time to regenerate risk unnecessary stress and delayed growth.

Repotting during the Vegi phase

Since root development is particularly active during Vegi, this is also the phase in which repotting usually occurs. As a rule of thumb: repot as soon as the roots have adequately filled the current pot, but before the plant becomes root-bound. Too frequent or too late repotting unnecessarily slows down growth, so a regular, careful check of root development at the bottom of the pot is worthwhile.

Common problems in the vegetative phase

Yellow lower leaves: Often a sign of nitrogen deficiency, but can also be the natural dying off of older leaves.

Slow, stretched growth: Usually an indication of too little or too distant light. The plant then stretches in search of more light intensity.

Pests: Spider mites and fungus gnats are particularly common during Vegi, especially with high humidity. Regular inspection of the undersides of leaves helps to detect infestations early.

Nutrient burn: Brown, burnt-looking leaf tips usually indicate too high a fertilizer concentration.
