Water filtration is the basic principle of every bong: the smoke passes through water before you inhale it. This cools it down and some of the coarse components are retained. This is exactly what makes a hit from a bong so much smoother than from a dry pipe.
How does water filtration work?
When you draw, the smoke is guided via the downstem below the water surface. There it rises in bubbles. On this path, it releases heat and some of the water-soluble substances and coarse particles remain in the water. The result: cooler, smoother smoke.
What improves filtration?
- Diffuser – breaks the smoke into fine bubbles for more water contact.
- Percolator – an additional filter chamber for an even smoother hit.
- Ice – provides additional cooling, for example in an ice bong.
What water filtration doesn't achieve
Important to know: Water filtration cools and smoothes the smoke and retains coarse particles – but it does not make smoking pollutant-free. If you want to reduce pollutants more effectively, combine it with an activated carbon filter.
Frequently asked questions
Why is bong smoke smoother than from a pipe?
Because the water cools and smoothes the smoke – the hit is less harsh.
Does water filter out pollutants?
Some water-soluble substances, but not everything. It does not make it pollutant-free.
How much water do I need?
Enough so that the downstem is immersed one to two centimeters – more on this under Bong Water.
Does more water cool better?
Not necessarily – more important than the amount is that the downstem is properly immersed and the bubbles are fine.
