A joint is probably the most well-known form of cannabis consumption: finely ground material rolled into cigarette paper, with a filter at the end. Simple in principle, but a small art in execution – a well-rolled joint draws evenly and burns cleanly.

What is a joint made of?

The ingredients are manageable, but each part has its purpose:

  • Rolling Paper – the cigarette paper used for rolling. It comes in many sizes and materials.
  • Tip (Filter) – the rolled filter at the end, which provides stability and prevents material from being drawn through.
  • The smoking material – previously and evenly ground with a grinder.

Why is a grinder so important?

Evenly ground material is half the battle. If you break it up by hand, you'll get uneven pieces that burn irregularly and clog the draw. A grinder ensures a loose, even consistency – the joint then burns cleanly and evenly.

Joint, Blunt, or Pre-Roll?

A joint is rolled in thin paper. A blunt uses a tobacco leaf wrap instead. And a pre-roll is a joint that has already been rolled. Three ways to the same goal, with different effort and taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a joint absolutely need a filter?
It's not necessary, but a tip makes drawing more pleasant, stabilizes the mouthpiece, and keeps crumbs back.

What is the right paper size?
That depends on the quantity. King Size for larger joints, shorter formats for individual ones. Thin paper burns slower and more neutrally.

Why does my joint burn unevenly?
Mostly due to unevenly ground material or rolling it too loosely or too tightly. A grinder and some practice will solve this.

What is a "Cross Joint"?
An elaborate variant with two crossed joints. More of a gimmick than for everyday use – but a classic among rolling masterpieces.
