Cannabis is a genus of plants that has been used by humans for millennia – as a fiber plant, medicinal plant, and intoxicant. Botanically, it belongs to the hemp family. In everyday language, "cannabis" usually refers to the dried flowers of the female plant, which contain active ingredients such as THC and CBD.

What types of cannabis are there?

Traditionally, three types are distinguished, even though modern strains are almost always hybrids:

• Cannabis Sativa – tall-growing, with effects described as more stimulating. Classic Sativas include Haze strains.
• Cannabis Indica – more compact in growth, with effects described as more body-focused.
• Cannabis Ruderalis – small and robust, important for autoflowering strains.

Most modern strains are hybrids, combining characteristics of several types.

The most important active ingredients

Cannabis contains over a hundred so-called cannabinoids. The two best known are THC, which is responsible for the intoxicating effect, and CBD, which is not intoxicating. In addition, there are terpenes – the aromatic compounds that characterize the smell and taste of a strain and are particularly in focus when dabbing.

How is cannabis used?

Consumption methods range from joints to bongs and vaporizers to edibles. A grinder is often used for processing the flowers.

Is cannabis the same as hemp?
Botanically, they are the same plants. Colloquially, "hemp" often refers to the utility plant with very little THC (fiber, seeds), while "cannabis" refers to the potent flowers.

What is the difference between Sativa and Indica?
Originally, this described growth and origin. Today, the terms are used more as a general guide to the effects – scientifically, the distinction is blurred because almost all are hybrids.

How is cannabis legally regulated in Germany?
