A grinder is one of the most inconspicuous but most frequently used tools in everyday life – and that's precisely why cleaning is often postponed. Over time, resins and plant residues accumulate in the teeth, screen, and threads. This not only makes the grinder stiff but also affects taste and hygiene. Why clean regularly at all?

A dirty grinder loses efficiency: the teeth stick together, turning becomes harder, and the result becomes more uneven. Resin residues can also impart an old, rancid taste to freshly ground material. And since germs can easily accumulate in moist, organic residues, regular cleaning is also a matter of hygiene, not just function.

Which method suits which material?

Metal grinders (aluminum, stainless steel): Robust and heat-resistant – they are the only variant suitable for boiling. Isopropyl alcohol and freezing also work without problems.

Plastic and acrylic grinders: Do not boil – at high heat, the material can deform or be damaged. Mild soapy water or short alcohol baths are better, no long soaking times.

Wooden grinders: Neither boiling nor soaking. Moisture can cause wood to swell or warp. Here, only careful manual cleaning with a slightly damp cloth and a soft brush helps.

Method 1: Boiling (for metal grinders only)

Boiling thoroughly loosens stuck resins but is only suitable for metal.

1. Disassemble the grinder completely into its individual parts – lid, blades, screen chamber, if present.
2. Bring water to a boil in a pot, enough to cover all parts.
3. Carefully place the parts into the boiling water with kitchen tongs.
4. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, occasionally moving them with the tongs so nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot.
5. Remove the parts and let them cool on a towel or rack – do not touch immediately, they are hot.
6. After cooling, scrub with a soft brush or toothbrush. The heat has already dissolved the resins, so they can now be easily removed.
7. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
8. Allow to air dry completely before reassembling the grinder – residual moisture can otherwise lead to rust.

Method 2: Isopropyl alcohol (suitable for all materials, with caution for acrylic)

Isopropyl alcohol with 90% purity or higher reliably dissolves resins and disinfects at the same time.

1. Disassemble the grinder and tap off coarse plant residues beforehand or remove them with a small brush.
2. Place the parts in a bowl and cover completely with alcohol.
3. Allow to soak for about 20 to 30 minutes, occasionally swirling the bowl gently.
4. Scrub thoroughly with a soft toothbrush, especially the teeth and screen.
5. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until no alcohol smell remains.
6. Allow to dry completely.

For acrylic and plastic grinders: keep soaking times short. Too long in an alcohol bath can cloud or damage the material.

Method 3: Freezing

A gentle alternative, especially if you want to reuse the dissolved resin.

1. Disassemble the grinder and place the parts on a clean cloth or paper towel.
2. Place in the freezer for about 30 minutes. The cold makes the resin brittle.
3. After freezing, the resin can be carefully scraped off with a toothpick, a wooden spatula, or a soft brush.

This method is suitable for all materials but is most effective for light to medium soiling. For heavily resin-caked grinders, combining it with alcohol or boiling afterwards is worthwhile.

The kief screen: the most sensitive part

In four-part grinders with a separate kief chamber, the fine metal screen deserves special attention. A clogged screen noticeably reduces the amount of kief collected. Clean it with a soft toothbrush and short alcohol baths, gently dab off residues with a cotton swab, and avoid bending the screen or applying pressure – it deforms easily and is difficult to reshape.

After cleaning: Reassemble and lightly oil

Once all parts are completely dry, you can reassemble the grinder. For stiff rotating mechanisms, a tiny drop of food-grade oil on the moving parts helps. Less is more here – too much oil will collect residues itself and can affect the taste.
