Relative humidity (RH) indicates in percent how much moisture the air contains relative to its maximum. It is one of the most important values in post-processing: Whether during drying, curing, or storage – RH determines quality and shelf life everywhere.
What RH means
100 percent RH means the air is saturated with moisture; 0 percent would be absolutely dry. Both are bad for flowers: Too much moisture promotes mold, while too little makes the material brittle and harsh and costs aroma. RH is measured with a hygrometer – for storage, conveniently directly in the container.
Reference values per step
The target values differ depending on the phase. During drying, the range is often around 50 to 60 percent. For curing and storage, many aim for about 58 to 62 percent – moist enough to preserve aroma and consistency, dry enough to prevent mold. RH is often kept constant during storage with humidity packs.
